Perinatal & Postpartum Depression

Perinatal and postpartum depression are mood disorders that happen during pregnancy and after birth. Perinatal depression includes depression during pregnancy and up to a year after giving birth. Symptoms can include sadness, anxiety, irritability, trouble sleeping or eating, difficulty bonding with the baby, and feelings of hopelessness or guilt.

Postpartum depression happens after childbirth and is stronger and longer-lasting than the "baby blues," which usually go away within two weeks. It can make it hard to care for yourself and your baby.

Both types need to be recognized and treated because they affect the health of the parent and child. Treatment can include therapy, support groups, and sometimes medication, always with a doctor’s help. Early treatment leads to better results for the parent and family.
